Naina Kapila on Rebuilding a Career in Tech

When Naina Kapila moved to Australia, her career in IT was put on hold. With over a decade of experience and strong technical qualifications, she faced a seven-year gap in her career while raising her children. The fast pace of change in technology made it harder to return to the workforce.
“The problem in IT is if you have a gap, it’s very difficult to get back in given the fast-paced change in technologies,” she explains.
Determined to restart her career, Naina chose to reskill in cloud technologies and joined the AWS re/Start program with Generation Australia in early 2022.
RESKILLING FOR A NEW START
Naina heard about Generation Australia through a friend and was impressed with the program from the beginning.
“The daily discussions, practical exercises, and structured hours made it feel like a proper job, which motivated me,” she says.
Beyond technical skills, Naina learned essential workplace behaviours like effective communication and adaptability, which are crucial in Australia’s professional culture.
“Generation gave me the push I needed to get back on track and showed me how to navigate a new work environment.”
A FRESH PATH FORWARD
Just three months after graduating, Naina secured a role with Infosys as part of their Workday Cloud team. From there, her career continued to grow. Today, she works as a Senior Software Engineer at Newfold Digital, where she’s applying her skills in cloud technologies and software development to build impactful solutions.
“The biggest takeaway for me was the growth mindset—keep learning, keep moving forward,” she says.
Her advice for anyone considering a Generation program is simple:
“Go for it. It helps you grow and makes it easier to connect with employers.”
